About "Goblins of Wahweap"

This Fine Art Southern Utah Image was taken in the Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument which is located on the Utah - Arizona border.  This spectacularly scenic area borders the Vermilion Cliffs, the Paria Plateau, the Coral Pink Sand Dunes, Lake Powell, and Antelope Canyon (in the Navajo Nation) so the opportunities for exploring, hiking and photography adventures is just about limitless.  The Wahweap Hoodoo's, with their ghost, or goblin like appearance, are one of the many treasures of this region.

The geology of these magnificent hoodoo's is very interesting.  The darker "cap stone," which rests on the top of these white pillars, is called Dakota Sandstone.  It originated from the shore of an ancient sea and is approximately 100 million years old. These stone caps protect the lighter stone (Entrada Sandstone, 160 million years old) from erosion by the elements allowing these extraordinary pillars to be formed.
