About "Tatoosh Vista"
This Mount Rainier Image was captured at the eastern end of the
Tatoosh Range which serves as the southern border between
Mount Rainier National Park and the
Tatoosh Wilderness. As is the case with many of the high ridges and peaks that border Mt. Rainier, the
vistas of this massive and breathtaking stratovolcano can simply leave you speechless. The Puyallup Tribe of Native Americans called Rainier "
Tahoma" which means "
mother of waters" whose name still very aptly applies today. An interesting fact, which gives credence to the Puyallup's name of "
Tahoma," is that the volume of ice contained in
Rainier's glaciers is greater than the total volume of all the other glaciers in the lower 48 states combined.
From a photographic standpoint, I chose to shoot this image on a late afternoon in August (1996) so that I could capture the beautiful backlight that casts such a serene mood on the mountain, and which also helps to define and separate the various rugged ridges resulting in great depth in the picture. I like to call this affect "horizontal layering" which I try to implement as often as possible to help give my images an almost 3D effect.
